My father, Ben Schutte, decided to buy a vacation home in the Southern Cape (Mossel Bay) in 2002. In 2003 we bought the farm Berg en Dal Nature Reserve. The farm was bought for its natural beauty. And soon after, various plains game were then established on the farm. The farm is situated 30 km out on the R327 between Mossel Bay and Herbertsdale.
In 2012 my family and I decided to move to Mossel Bay permanently, I then began developing the farm; I built breeding camps and bomas for the purpose of farming with rare and exotic game.
We started with our first herd of Golden Wildebeest which were purchased from Botlierskop Stud Game. We later supplemented our herd with Golden King Wildebeest cows that were purchased at Quaggasfontein in Colesberg. With our first calving season we were very fortunate and a beautiful King Wildebeest bull was born, he now has his own herd of cows.
It was then decided to start with Sable Antelope, we bought a couple of bulls to see how they would adapt to the area – All went well. Zambian cross heifers were then purchased from Wintershoek Wild to start our next breeding project. The farm also consists of other breeding programmes including White Black and copper Springbuck, Livingstone Eland, Impala and Giraffe, as well as various plains game. We are also in the process of establishing Buffalo on Berg en Dal.
